You moved abroad with qualifications, experience and ambition. Yet in your new country, you may feel unsure where you fit professionally—or how to begin again.
I know this feeling well. My journey took me from Tunisia to Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and the Netherlands. Before moving, I spent nine years as a university professor. I had experience and a professional network.
In a new country, they no longer opened doors in the same way.
I was also a mother, helping my children adjust while rebuilding our family routines.
It was easy to put my career last and wonder:
Where do I fit now?
The shift that helped me move forward
The hardest part was not a lack of ambition. It was the gap between the woman I knew myself to be and what my new environment recognised.
For a while, I believed I needed a complete answer before taking action. I kept waiting for certainty.
Clarity is not found. It is built.
This insight connects my book, Succeeding in Uncertain Times, with the S.U.C.C.E.E.D. Framework I later created. We build clarity by reflecting, acting, learning and adjusting.
Seven steps to rebuild your career
1 Sense Uncertainty
Name the exact uncertainty: your qualifications, the local market, your professional identity or how work will fit your life. A specific problem is easier to address.
2 Upgrade Perception
Relocation changes your environment, not your value. Identify the strengths that travelled with you, then learn how to explain them in language your new market understands.
3 Clarify Identity and Value
Look beyond your previous job title. What matters now? Which strengths do you want to use? Motherhood belongs in this reflection because your next move must fit your life today.
4 Cultivate Support Systems
You do not have to navigate this alone. Start with one useful conversation and a clear request for information, feedback, an introduction or encouragement.
5 Explore Opportunities
Choose a few realistic directions instead of forcing one immediate answer. Compare them with your values, strengths, responsibilities and the opportunities available where you live.
6 Experiment Strategically
Test one direction through a conversation, application or small project. Notice what gave you energy, how people responded and what you learned before making a larger commitment.
Try this this week: Choose one role you are considering. Speak with someone working in that field locally. Ask which skills employers value and what entry routes exist. Use what you learn to decide your next small step.
7 Design a Sustainable Path
Choose a direction that respects your ambition, energy, family and finances. Set three priorities, take one immediate action and choose a date to review what is working.
Your career is still yours
Rebuilding does not mean recreating the exact career you left. My path carried my experience as a professor into my work as an author, coach and framework creator.
Your move has not erased your career. Begin by naming one uncertainty, then take one small action that can give you useful information.
Small strategic steps matter more than perfect plans.
